The Creoles of the Nicaribbean

One of the seven photographic projects selected for the national exhibition in the third edition of ExpoPhoto Nicaragua 2020, which took place from 30 October to 1 November at the Olof Palme Convention Centre in Managua.

The project "The Creoles of the Nicaribbean" seeks to represent the characteristics of the Afrodescendant Creole ethnic group of Nicaragua.

Through the photographs, viewers embark on a journey through time, appreciating various faces that reflect the Creoles' history, suffering, dreams, and roots. The images showcase the distinct features of this ethnic group, highlighting the diversity in skin tone, hair types, and expressions among Black people that make them unique yet simultaneously homogeneous.

The sequence of the photographs emphasises respect for our elders; the importance of history, heritage, and generational continuity. Consequently, viewers see the faces of people of various ages.

The project aims to raise awareness of the diversity of the Creoles of Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast and break common stereotypes. It strives to portray this ethnic group beyond the traditional Maypole dance and the legacy of slavery, showcasing the natural beauty of this community in all its forms and ages.
