Statement on the death of Pope Francis

As the world mourns the loss of Pope Francis, I join millions of Catholics and non-Catholics alike in paying my respects, not only for his life as a man of faith but for his unwavering commitment to social justice and his dedication to promoting interreligious dialogue.

His years as head of the Catholic Church and the Holy See were marked by his less traditional approach—something, perhaps, that distinguished him from his predecessors—as he represented the spirit of his origin, being the first ever Pope of Latin America and the first from the American continent.

I personally admired him for his views, the way he made young people connect with their faith, not only through the Gospel, but on a wider level, invoking a sense of social responsibility and a life sustained on principles of respect, inclusivity, and faith.

I was fortunate to witness his recitation of the Angelus in September 2024 at Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican City. It is a moment I will always cherish. Among the many things he shared that day, he reminded us of the importance of caring for one another.

The world has indeed lost a humanistic figure who reminded us that, regardless of our beliefs and who we are, we all have a place in this world, and we should cherish our common home, respect, and care for one another.

Rest in peace, Pope Francis.
