22 December 2023

This year will be remembered for the events that took place around us and those that impacted our lives positively and negatively.

In the midst of it all, let us take a moment to reflect on the past months and express gratitude for the people, moments, and lessons that 2023 has brought us.

With hope and renewed strength for the coming 2024, let us continue to fight our battles, whether to improve ourselves or help better our surroundings, remembering that anything is possible—even when it seems dim.

Wherever you may find yourself, I hope you can discover solace within and cherish the company of the people you love. May all your aspirations and goals find fulfilment in the coming year.

Happy Holidays!

¡Felices fiestas!

Today, ten years ago, I started doing radio broadcasting, one of my greatest passions and long-time love.

Back then, for people in my hometown, this was the main means of information and entertainment. As a teen I was at that time, I used this space to educate on sexual and reproductive rights, to create environmental awareness, to share about our local culture—and of course to play some good songs to dance off to.

Over the years, and in different parts of my country, I have hosted and collaborated on various programs, advocating for social development and highlighting the indigenous and Afrodescendant cultures of the Caribbean.

Engaging in community radio remains a cherished hobby of mine. It provides an opportunity not just for entertainment but also to convey real-time meaningful messages that extend beyond the reach of television and the Internet.

Here's to many more years doing radio!

On 11 November, I attended the 2023 Chevening Awards Orientation event in London, England.

It was nice meeting professionals from different backgrounds from all over the world and sharing our experiences and stories.

At the event, I wore a traditional dashiki shirt with my country's national colours and carried with me both the Nicaraguan and Caribbean Nicaragua flags.

As a young professional, I am honoured to be representing my country, people and culture in this year's Chevening cohort.

I am grateful for this opportunity to continue developing my professional skills in the United Kingdom to favour Nicaragua and the Latin American and Caribbean society.

*For the 2023/2024 year, 71,912 people applied, and 1364 were selected from 140 countries, representing 1.9% of applicants.

On Friday 27 October 2023, students of the University of Sussex had the opportunity to learn about Nicaragua and the Creole Afro-descendant ethnic group that lives on the Caribbean Coast.

A general presentation about Nicaragua was made, where students learned about the country’s history, tourist and natural attractions, as well as its main festivities and cuisine.

The documentary “The Black Creoles: Memories and Identities” was watched, and afterwards, a brief presentation about the Autonomy Regine of Caribbean Nicaragua was made, followed by a Q&A.

This presentation was made to commemorate the 36 anniversary of the autonomous regime of Caribbean Nicaragua and to make aware to foreign students and academics about this multicultural region and culture in Central America.

30 October is a day to celebrate the diversity of Caribbean Nicaragua society, a moment to collectively acknowledge our history, struggles, ancestral and rightful claims and to celebrate achievements.

Whether you are Miskito, Creole, Rama, Garifuna, Mayangna or Ulwa, this land of ancestral wisdom and blessed grounds is yours. It is your responsibility to maintain it, your identity and ancestral values, so they can continue to prevail in the coming years.

Autonomy means knowing your origins, embracing your present and building the society that everyone deserves. It is part of who we are and we should always make it part of our day-to-day life.

Happy Autonomy Day!
